Program Overview – Child Care & Family Services (Multiple Locations)
The RECE staff is responsible for the care of children in group settings by working with other team members to plan, supervise and implement the daily program.  This position is responsible for providing appropriate direction, encouragement and support to the children, their families, staff, students, and volunteers in addition to being flexible, resourceful, sensitive, and respectful of individual needs.

What You Will Do
  • Responsible for the guidance and care of children in groups and for the planning and implementation of daily programs that enhance the social, physical, intellectual, cognitive and emotional development of children.
  • Responsible for abiding by the Unit and WoodGreen policies and other regulations as stated in the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 and City of Toronto’s AQI.  This includes maintaining legal staff: child ratios and necessitates working closely with casual staff in cases of staff absenteeism.
  • Responsible for setting reasonable limits according to the child's developmental stage, and for giving appropriate direction, encouragement and support individually and in groups.  This includes providing extra support for individual children when necessary.
  • Responsible for recognizing, dealing with, and defining unusual behaviour and, if unable to deal with behaviour successfully, reporting to the Manager and working with various professional and resource persons as required to alleviate problems.
  • Responsible for working as a team with other staff.  This includes participating in the daily implementation of program activities and contributing to weekly planning in conjunction with other staff.
  • Responsible for recording the daily attendance of the children, receiving medical information as required especially in cases of ongoing absenteeism, and reporting to the appropriate personnel.
  • Responsible for the daily safety, health and hygienic conditions of the children.  This includes the following:
    • Dispensing medications when designated by the Manager and monitoring child's intake/reaction
    • Getting quick medical attention in emergencies
    • Monitoring individual children's health
    • Alerting parents to any medical needs of the child and helping consult medical professionals as appropriate
    • Ensuring that program set up considers the children's health and safety as a priority at all times
    • Completing incident reports when necessary and ensuring parents are informed
    • Reporting any serious occurrence/injury to Manager and/or V-P Child Care & Family Services
    • Being aware of and following proper fire and emergency procedures.
    • Being aware of and following proper diapering/toileting procedures.
  • Responsible for safely escorting children outside of the centre and ensuring that adequate and appropriate supervision is provided on all outings.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining good relationships with parents.  This includes participating in parent/teacher interviews, communicating with parents informally, attending meetings and helping with any general or specific difficulties where possible and appropriate.
  • Responsible for written reports on children in accordance with established schedules, for completing written assessments and developmental checklists as required, and for informing parents on an on-going basis about children's progress.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of equipment and furnishings, for informing the Manager when replenishment is necessary, for sharing housekeeping responsibilities, and for assessing equipment needs and making recommendations regarding purchases. 
  • Responsible for the orderly arrangement, appearance, decor and learning environment of the program room(s).
  • Responsible for training and evaluating student placements and volunteers, and for supervising casual staff as required.
  • Responsible for ensuring, in conjunction with other staff, that staff timetables are designed to provide for adequate and appropriate supervision of children at all times, and to meet all program needs as required.  This includes working on program during all scheduled times so as to maintain required ratios and following shift schedule as identified.  Shifts change and rotate to meet program needs.
  • Responsible for reporting any signs of physical or mental abuse of any children in care to the proper authorities.
  • Responsible for participation in other WoodGreen child care programs as scheduled or otherwise required.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining effective working relationships and communication with appropriate internal and external personnel as required. This may include:  agency administrative staff, catering service staff; elementary school staff, public health staff, and other community resources.
  • Responsible for checking the outdoor facilities for safety and reporting any unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel.  This includes informing the appropriate staff when cleaning of the playground is required and assuring that proper cleaning is maintained.
  • Responsible for performing housekeeping duties which may include but are not limited to the following:  sweeping, disinfecting washroom/diaper change facilities, cleaning and set-up of lunch tables, preparing and serving lunches, laundry, and other duties as designated.
  • Responsible for upgrading training and education as directed by WoodGreen Community Services to fulfill the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ensures the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.
  • Responsible for representing the unit on internal staff committees as directed by the Manager and/or V-P, Child Care & Family Services.
  • Participates in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager and in EmPerform performance management system.
What You Bring to the Team
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current RECE (Registered Early Childhood Educator) Certification from CECE.
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR-C.
  • Health assessment, including up-to-date immunization records and TB test required.
  • Experience in licensed child care work and activities.
