Program Overview – English Language Services, Community Programs

Newcomer Programs & Services has served newcomers and refugees in Toronto for over four decades. Its mandate is to help newcomers and refugees settle, adjust, and integrate into society. Funded by the three levels of government, WoodGreen Newcomer Programs & Services operates English language training programs, settlement services, employment support programs, mentorship, networking activities, and social and recreational activities. Newcomer Programs & Services is committed to providing friendly and professional services to all newcomers to help them connect with Canadian society and their new way of life.

What You Will Do

  • Keep current with PBLA information by accessing the Center for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB) website and participating in the discussions in PBLA-related forums.
  • Provide PBLA orientation and support to new instructors.
  • Advise administrators on needed supports such as professional development or resources.
  • Complete an annual self-assessment using the PBLA Practice Review framework and identify and complete an action plan.
  • Facilitate informal small-group discussions or learning groups to address common concerns using classroom teachers as resources for one other.
  • Offer workshops related to PBLA implementation, such as the CCLB Professional Learning Sessions.
  • Observe instructors and provide feedback and/or suggestions as a peer and colleague.
  • Review monthly curriculum reports, providing feedback and/or suggestions as a peer and colleague.
  • Carry out team teaching or team planning occasionally and give demonstration lessons.
  • Collaborate and cooperate with other staff within WoodGreen to ensure clients’ success and integration in programming.
  • Support WoodGreen’s learner recruitment efforts through providing input, encouraging referrals from existing learners, and supporting recruitment activities.
  • Maintain program resources (e.g., computers, instructional materials and books) and ensure they are in good condition.
  • Participate in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager.
  • Ensure the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching, Adult Education, Social Science, or a related field.
  • TESL Ontario Certificate; current member in good standing with TESL Ontario.
  • Completion of PBLA (Portfolio-based Language Assessment) training with minmum of 32 weeks of using PBLA in the classroom.
  • 3+ years’ experience in teaching English as a Second Language.
  • Experience using technology and delivering online classes and hybrid models effectively.
  • Experience in teaching multi-levels in a multicultural environment.

  • Strong ability to work in a team and with limited supervision.
  • Solid interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks including training in and experience with implementing Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA).
  • Experience in providing train the trainer support, e.g. PD workshops, team lead, etc.
  • Knowledge of settlement issues and familiarity with educational resources for newcomers to Canada.
  • Experience teaching English language classes to newcomers from diverse backgrounds with a positive approach to multi-level teaching.
  • Understanding of anti-racism issues and community development principles.
  • Excellent computer skills:  MS office, Internet, and knowledge of on-line teaching technologies and resources.  
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in teams.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proven administrative skills: submitting curriculum outlines, lesson plans, attendance records, and monthly reports.
  • Previous experience as a PBLA lead is a strong asset.
  • Experience using Avenue.ca is an asset.

The successful candidate for this position is required to concurrently teach an IRCC funded LINC class throughout the duration of their employment in this role.
